As a result, concert scenes are examined as sites for provocative interactions between these two realities, in which real-world musicians appear in fictional narratives, and an audience’s suspension of disbelief is problematised. In blurring the musical experiences of onscreen observers and participants, these concert scenes also allegorize music’s role in creating a shared subjectivity between film audience and character, and prompt Winters to propose a radically new vision of music’s role in narrative cinema wherein musical underscore becomes part of a shared audio-visual space that may be just as accessible to the characters as the music they encounter in scenes of concert performance.

About the Author

Ron Husband is a Disney animator who has worked on films such as The Small One, The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company, The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Fantasia 2000, the re-release of Beauty and the Beast in IMAX format and Treasure Planet released in 2002 where he animated Long John Silver. He also animated the cool cat in the music video for Paula Abdul’s "Opposites Attract". On top of his animation credits, Ron has also illustrated numerous children’s books and magazines, and runs drawing workshops at Cal Arts, Gnomon school and other locations all over the world.

Good tips on quick figure sketching

[[VIDEOID:mo2K8WDRALM9UFA]]Quick Sketching with Ron Husband is essentially a book of quick tips on figure sketching. The book's goal is to get you to sketch quick, capture the moment, posture and gesture of people you see.

The book collects the sketches that Disney animator Ron Husband has made over decades. They might be very loose but they still portray successfully what the character is doing simply from the body language and movement. The tips are brief yet insightful. There are suggestions on what to look out for, techniques on making your figure drawing more interesting and other useful tips.

There's quite a lot of white space in the book. Not really a deal breaker, but just an observation. While the book is 408-pages, the content actually takes up only 352 pages and the rest are blank pages for you to draw on (probably at home because this is too big a book to bring out).

The more you draw, the more you can draw, the better you can draw. This book is inspiring in that sense.

This book reminds me very much of the two-volume set Drawn to Life: 20 Golden Years of Disney Master Classes by Walt Stanchfield which is also highly recommended.

Quick Sketching better than expected.

This book was perfect for me. I have had trouble in the past of not being able to jot down my quick sketches quick or concise enough. This book is a great reference for that and also gives a lot of tips that help me become a better overall artist. It is a must buy for up and coming animators but also great for over all artist who love that have fluid sketches that make your work sen more a live.

About the Author

Sharon Pickering is a Professor of Criminology and Head of Social Sciences at Monash University. She is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow on Border Policing and Director of the Border Observatory (www.borderobservatory.org). Her work on publishing scholarly work on asylum in the national media was awarded the Australian Human Rights Award in 2012. Professor Pickering recently co-authored a book with Leanne Weber called Globalization and Borders: Deaths at the Global Frontier, which documented and analysed over 40, 000 border related deaths in Europe, North America and Australia. It recently won the C.M. Alder Prize for best book by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology.

Julie Ham is a doctoral student in criminology at Monash University and an associate of the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW). Her doctoral research explores how the regulation of sex work and migration shapes sex workers’ security, mobility and agency. Since 2003, she has worked with community-based research projects working with and for women in sex work, immigrant and refugee populations, women substance users, low-income populations, and anti-violence organisations. She has published on the impact of anti-trafficking measures on sex workers’ rights, feminist participatory action research, and activist efforts by trafficking survivors, sex workers and domestic workers.

About the Author

Lisa Jean Moore, a medical sociologist, is Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Purchase College, State University of New York. Her scholarship is located at the intersections of sociology of health and medicine, science and technology studies, feminist studies, animal studies, and critical body studies. She is the author of Sperm Counts: Overcome by Man’s Most Precious Fluid and the co-author of Gendered Bodies: Feminist Perspectives, Missing Bodies: The Politics of Visibility, and Buzz: Urban Beekeeping and the Power of the Bee. Additionally she has co-edited The Body Reader and is a founding co-editor of a successful book series at NYU Press entitled Biopolitics: Medicine, Technoscience, and Health in the 21st Century.

Monica J. Casper is Professor and Head of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona. A sociologist, her scholarly and teaching interests include gender, race, bodies, health, sexuality, disability, and trauma. She has published several books, including the award-winning The Making of the Unborn Patient: A Social Anatomy of Fetal Surgery. Her current research focuses on race and the biopolitics of infant mortality in the U.S. She is a founding co-editor of the NYU Press book series Biopolitics: Medicine, Technoscience, and Health in the 21st Century, as well as a managing editor of The Feminist Wire.

Brilliant!

I usually dislike textbooks . This is really different. Extremely well written and engaging, it is a versatile tool to teach a broad range of subjects, initiate discussions in the classroom, or use as an excellent reference /starting point to pursue research threads. You can structure an entire syllabus around it, or take different directions from chapters which can stand on their own.
Perhaps more importantly, it is one of the very few books written by academic sociologists that I felt relieved and excited to give as a gift to my teen daughter , just to read for her pleasure and reference when she is struggling to make sense of several key issues explored in the book. A kind of a contemporary sociological version of "Our Bodies Our Selves".

I have learned a great deal about SCRD through this book, and I recommend it to all of my doctoral students pursuing SCRD dissertations and research projects. This problem is compounded by the nature of cybercrime as a continually evolving phenomenon driven by rapid and complex technological change.

Following an evaluation of the efficacy of the nation-state, the book goes on to explore how individuals and corporations could be integrated into a more decentralized, distributed system of cyberthreat control. Looking at initiatives in Estonia and Sweden which have attempted to incorporate civilians into their cyber-response efforts, Brenner suggests that civilian involvement may mediate the rigid hierarchies that exist among formal agencies and increase the flexibility of any response. Susan W. Brenner is NCR Distinguished Professor of Law and Technology at the University of Dayton, USA. Professor Brenner chaired a Working Group in an American Bar Association project that developed the ITU Toolkit for Cybercrime Legislation for the United Nation's International Telecommunications Union. She is a senior principal for Global CyberRisk, LLC.
