About the Author

Paul Morris is Professor of Religious Studies at Victoria University of Wellington where he holds the UNESCO Chair of Interreligious Understanding and Relations in New Zealand and the Pacific. Recent publications include: New Rights New Zealand: myths, moralities and markets (2005); Lloyd Geering Reader: Prophet of Modernity (2007); Religion in New Zealand Schools (2009), Religious Diversity in the New Zealand Workplace (2011).

William Shepard completed his PhD at Harvard and taught religious studies at Cornell College (Iowa, USA) and the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand) until retirement. His main research interest is modern Islamic ideologies. He has authored a textbook, Introducing Islam (Routledge, 2009), as well as other books and articles.

Toni Tidswell is a Senior Research Fellow in the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research, and an Adjunct Research Fellow with MCCA at Curtin University, Australia.

Paul Trebilco is Professor of Theology in the Department of Theology and Religion, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. His publications include Jewish Communities in Asia Minor (1991); The Early Christians in Ephesus from Paul to Ignatius (2004); Self-designations and Group Identity in the New Testament, (2011).

About the Author

Daniel Maudlin is Professor of Modern History, Department of History and Art History, Plymouth University, UK, where he teaches social and material culture approaches to architectural history. He previously taught history and cultural theory to architecture students at Plymouth University’s School of Architecture, Design and Environment. He has also taught at the Universities of Glasgow, Pennsylvania and St Andrews.

Marcel Vellinga is Reader in Anthropology of Architecture and Director of the Place, Culture and Identity research group in the School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University. Holding a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Leiden University (the Netherlands), his teaching and research is concerned with the anthropological study of architecture, vernacular architecture and architectural regeneration. His publications include Atlas of Vernacular Architecture of the World, with Paul Oliver (Routledge 2007); Vernacular Architecture in the 21st Century: Theory, Education, and Practice, with Lindsay Asquith (eds.)(Taylor and Francis 2006) and Constituting Unity and Difference: Vernacular Architecture in a Minangkabau Village (KITLV Press 2004) and various journal articles. Marcel is a Director of the Paul Oliver Vernacular Architecture Library.

It presents unit cost estimates of the WASH sector across geographic locations and technologies, including rural and peri-urban areas, and these are compared with service levels. It analyses detailed data from more than 5000 households across nine agro-climatic zones in Andhra Pradesh State in India. Key issues assessed include poverty analysis of service levels, cost drivers and factors at the village and household level, and governance aspects such as transparency, accountability and value for money in relation to unit costs and service levels.

This is the most comprehensive study of the WASH sector in India and elsewhere that utilises the life-cycle cost approach, along with GIS, econometric modelling and qualitative research methods. Not only does it contribute to research and methodology in this area, but the analysis also provides valuable insights for planners, policy makers and bi-lateral donors. The authors show how the methodology can also be applied in other developing country contexts.

A challenging and rewarding critical analysis of our environmental problems

This is a clearly written, compelling analysis of our inability to fix our environmental problems. The author is a university professor who demonstrates an enviable level of technical mastery over the material. Schoenberger argues that our range of action is limited by 'how a society works to produce and allocate social power'. The concept of social power refers to control over resources, including physical ones like land and minerals but also humans. The analysis is grounded in a historical and political economy approach, touching on the interactions between markets, the state, finance, industry, and competition. The analysis is sensible, realistic, and thorough. Schoenberger admits there are no quick solutions, but neither are these environmental problems insurmountable. The first step is an honest appraisal of how our collective action is constrained and the forces that structure our choices; this book provides such an appraisal.

No doubt, this is a challenging text. It presents ideas that typically fall outside of the tired mainstream thinking on the environment. It requires a close reading to fully parse its historically-sensitive and empirically-grounded arguments. Nonetheless, the reward is high and the clear writing style make this an enjoyable experience. The reader's understanding of the nature of our environmental problems will benefit from the original case studies on gold mining, the internal combustion engine, and the American built environment, in addition to the conceptual diagram of social power, and the schematic of the interactions between capitalism, the market, and the state.

The high quality of the book's substance and style should appeal to general readers as well as academic specialists. Its chief drawback is its price--Routledge is an academic publishing house, and as such the Kindle edition is priced at 39 dollars. Thoughtful and inspiring books like this are rare enough as it is. Hopefully the price will not dissuade dedicated readers of environmental history, political economy, geography, and sociology. I’ve just finished reading Schoenberger’s “Nature, Choice, and Social Power”. A wonderful and illuminating history and analysis of choices made in the past that have led us into long-term, and emerging, social disorders, and climate change. Schoenberger describes how social power made these choices in the past to help guide us toward making better decisions in the future. The book is uplifting, and bravely hopeful, with keen and extensive scholarship written with surprising wit and insight. Paul Krugman’s recent editorial in the NYTimes, 9/18/14, celebrates the thrust of Schoenbergers book : “Climate despair is all wrong. - -[Economic growth depends on] the many choices we make— about what to consume, about which technologies to use - - by making the right choices saving the planet would be cheap and maybe even come free.”

Una McMahon-Beattie is Head of Department for Hospitality and Tourism Management in the University of Ulster (UK). Her research interests include tourism and event marketing, revenue management and tourism futures. She is an editor/author of a number of books, book chapters and journals articles in these areas.

Karen A. Smith is Associate Professor in tourism management at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Her research areas include event and tourism volunteering, event ticketing and distribution, and the future of events and festivals. Elisa Backer is a Senior Lecturer in tourism at Federation University, Australia (formerly called University of Ballarat).
