About the Author

Eric Orlin is Professor of Classics at the University of Puget Sound. He is the author of Temples, Religion and Politics in the Roman Republic (1997) and Foreign Cults in Rome: Creating a Roman Empire (2010), in addition to articles on religion, memory, and culture during the age of Augustus.

Lisbeth S. Fried has written over forty articles on the ancient Near East and biblical studies. In addition, she is the author of Ezra, a Commentary (forthcoming), Ezra and the Law in History and Tradition (2014), and The Priest and the Great King: Temple-Palace Relations in the Persian Empire (2004), and editor of Was 1 Esdras First? An Investigation into the Priority and Nature of 1 Esdras (2011). She is currently preparing a critical commentary on Nehemiah.

Jennifer Knust is Associate Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Boston University. Author of a number of books and articles, her recent publications include Unprotected Texts: The Bible’s Surprising Contradictions on Sex and Desire (2011) and, with Zsuzsanna Varhelyi, Ancient Mediterranean Sacrifice (2011).

Michael Satlow is Professor of Religious Studies and Judaic Studies at Brown University. He has written on the social and religious history of Jews in antiquity as well as on method and theory in the study of religion. He has held fellowships from the ACLS and John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, among others. His most recent book is How the Bible Became Holy (2014).

Michael E. Pregill holds the position of Interlocutor in the Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies and Civilizations at Boston University, where he is developing a new digital scholarship initiative dedicated to interdisciplinary approaches to Islam. His monograph, The Living Calf of Sinai: Bible and Qur’an between Late Antiquity and Islam, is forthcoming.

This book captures these changes, where traditional R&D investments undertaken internally by firms are increasingly and strategically complemented by external sources of innovation and new knowledge.

Collaborations between firms, and between firms and other organizations, as well as the mobility of human capital, are strategic processes in order to share and circulate knowledge and competencies. They are also key determinants in the creation of new knowledge and innovation, and ultimately in growth dynamics. The circulation and distribution of knowledge is now a key input in the production of knowledge. Knowledge and innovation are understood as the result of collective and interactive processes at the system level, and less at the micro level. In other words, new knowledge production is less and less the result of individualistic behaviours of the firms and much more the effect of explicit and pro-active interactions and transactions put in place by local networks of innovators. In this perspective, economic space is much more defined by the quality of the interactions among actors rather than by their mere technological, sectoral or geographical proximity.

This book brings together new conceptual and empirical contributions and blends the analysis of the technological and geographical spaces in which innovation and knowledge are produced.

By comparing treatments of Uthman in pietistic literature and universal chronicles, the work traces the gradual silencing of more critical accounts in favor of those that portray Uthman as a saintly companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Through a comparative analysis of authors between genres and time periods, this book shows how authors were able to convey their personal perspectives on important religio-political tensions that emerged through the revolt against Uthman, namely the tension between Sunnis and Shiis, religious and political authority and appeals to maintain stability and unity vs. appeals for greater justice. This last debate, which in many ways began with the revolt against Uthman, has been repeated most recently in the Arab Spring. This work therefore provides readers with helpful historical context for important contemporary debates.

Although emerging scholarship in the social sciences suggests that religion can be a potential catalyst of cosmopolitanism and global citizenship, few attempts have been made to bring to the fore new theoretical positions and empirical analyses of how cosmopolitanism -- as a philosophical notion, a practice and identity outlook -- can also shape and inform concrete religious affiliations. The chapter contributions offer a serious attempt to critically engage both the limitations and possibilities of cosmopolitanism as an analytical and critical tool to understand a changing religious landscape in a globalizing world, namely, the so-called ‘new religious diversity’, religious conflict, and issues of migration, multiculturalism and transnationalism vis-à-vis the public exercise of religion. The contributors’ work is situated in a range of world sites in Africa, India, North America, Latin America, and Europe.

Maria Rovisco is a Lecturer in Media and Film Studies at York St John University.She has published articles on the tradition of European films of voyage, cosmopolitanism and religion, and on the cultural borders of Europe and globalization.

Yet Merleau-Ponty’s contribution is decisive, as he brings this tradition and other philosophical predecessors, particularly Descartes and Kant, to confront a neglected dimension of our experience: the lived body and the phenomenal world. Charting a bold course between the reductionism of science on the one hand and "intellectualism" on the other, Merleau-Ponty argues that we should regard the body not as a mere biological or physical unit, but as the body which structures one’s situation and experience within the world.

Merleau-Ponty enriches his classic work with engaging studies of famous cases in the history of psychology and neurology as well as phenomena that continue to draw our attention, such as phantom limb syndrome, synaesthesia, and hallucination. About the Author

Maurice Merleau-Ponty was born in 1908 in Rochefort-sur-Mer, France. Drawn to philosophy from a young age, Merleau-Ponty would go on to study alongside Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Simone Weil at the famous École Normale Supérieure. He completed a Docteur ès lettres based on two dissertations, La structure du comportement (1942) and Phénoménologie de la perception (1945). After a brief post at the University of Lyon, Merleau-Ponty returned to Paris in 1949 when he was awarded the Chair of Psychology and Pedagogy at the Sorbonne. In 1952 he became the youngest philosopher ever appointed to the prestigious Chair of Philosophy at the Collège de France. He died suddenly of a stroke in 1961 aged fifty-three, at the height of his career. He is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Routledge Murders a Great Work

Merleau-Ponty's work is nothing less than a classic, one of the great works of philosophy in the 20th century. It should go without saying, then, that this work should be made available in an up-to-date and scholarly translation.

Unfortunately, this is what Routledge has refused to do. Not only does this "new" edition maintain all of the known mistakes and inconsistencies of the original translation (most of which were not corrected when the translation was revised twenty years ago), but it also introduces literally dozens of type-setting errors. In addition to all of the obvious mistakes in punctuation and spelling (e.g., "intelfection" on p. xx; "in a world" instead of "in a word" on p. 129; "deralizes" for "derealizes" on p. 140; "writes" for "writers," p. 163; "Rinswanger" for "Binswanger," note 6, p. 185, and the list goes on and on), you will also encounter such lovely gems as "Bergson's inferiority" (instead of "interiority", p. 67) and "adduction" transformed into "abduction" -- when distinguishing between the two is precisely the point of Merleau-Ponty's discussion (p. 243). In short, an already flawed translation has now been bungled into a bloody mess. If you are reading this book for the first time, you would be well-advised to check the used bookstores for a copy of the earlier edition. If you are trying to use this text with students, lots of luck to you!

It is also worth mentioning that Routledge has again failed to include a translation of Merleau-Ponty's original table of contents in this edition, so that many English readers are still unaware that he provided a detailed outline of the entire text to guide the reader. A translation by Daniel Guerriere is available in the Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology 10, no. 1 (1979) - although, of course, the page numbers no longer correspond to this "new" edition.

Finally!

It is difficult to overstate the importance of this new edition of a twentieth century classic, or the magnitude of the translator's achievement. For five decades the English-language reception of PHENOMENOLOGY OF PERCEPTION has been hampered by the Colin Smith translation, rushed into print shortly after the author's death, apparently with no competent editorial supervision. Donald Landes has done the job right this time, and is supported by an excellent introduction by Taylor Carman. To give a flavor of what's changed, here's a passage from Merleau-Ponty's original, from the opening paragraph of Part I, Ch. 5, "The Body as a Sexed Being":

Or tant que nous nous adressions à l'espace ou à la chose perçue, il n'était pas facile de redécouvrir le rapport du sujet incarné et de son monde, parce qu'ile se transforme de lui-même dans le pur commerce du sujet épistémologique et de l'objet (p. 180).

In the Smith translation, this passage reads:

Now so long as we considered space or the things perceived, it was not easy to rediscover the relationship between the embodied subject and its world, because it is transformed by its own activity into the intercourse between the epistemological subject and the object (p. 178).

Translating 'commerce' as 'intercourse' in a chapter on the body as sexed being gives precisely the wrong impression, and has led to numerous wholly specious interpretations. Here is Landes's text:

But insofar as we focused on space or the perceived thing, it was not easy to discover the relation between the embodied subject and his world because this relation transforms itself in the pure exchange between the epistemological subject and the object (p. 156).

If only philosophers would follow his lead today!

As shown in his first book, The Structure of Behavior, and this extension of that piece, Merleau-Ponty was a philosopher who was way ahead of his time.
While Husserl was off sputtering abstractly about phenomenology and 'essences', Merleau-Ponty planted himself squarely into the concrete, thick, world of lived experience: this book is a detailed phenomenological description of of attention, memory, space-perception, free will, and other psychological/phenomenological categories. M-P claims that simply by paying attention to this lifeworld, we see that previous philosophical systems have overlooked ineliminable dimensions of what it is like to be a person, and that this oversight has led to radically incomplete philosophical accounts of things like memory, perception, etc..
The book is so rich, original, and nuanced that it is hard to do it justice in a short review here. Not saddling himself with narrow academic techniques or fields, he draws on any resources he can to come to make sense of human experience. He cites not only philosophers such as Heidegger and Sarte, but draws equally heavily upon the Gestalt psychologists and neuroscientists of his day. He discusses phantom limbs, experiments on spatial perception, and psychophysical results from the Gestalt psychologists.
Many ideas that are popular in modern analytic philosophy and psychology can be found in this book: the view that 'sense data' are simply theoretical constructs, the view that attention focuses on objects not abstract spatial locations, and the claim that our original concepts cannot be understood independently of the embodied interactions with the world where we first come to use them.
I fear that Merleau-Ponty's nuanced philosophical psychology will fall through the cracks, being ignored by continental philosophers who focus on other things nowadays, and also by English speaking philosophers who dismiss Merleau-Ponty because he is a continental philosopher.

An inspiring book

Singer and Skerrett have collaborated to create a gem of a book that highlights the value of the "we" in couple relationships. Through stories and thoughtful integrations from the couple therapy field, they show how couples can cultivate generosity and a relational consciousness, leading to personal and couple well-being. This book is an important antidote to the culture of "me" that leads couples to competitive impasses. An important book for couples and therapists alike.

excellent guide

This book provides an easy to follow scaffold for moving from thinking of oneself first and foremost to thinking about the "we." And the paradox -- and bonus -- at the heart of the book is that in doing so, individuals find their needs met in more satisfying ways. Singer and Skerrett have written a book that is good for couples starting out on a relationship as well as for long-married couples. Easy to follow exercises and thought provoking questions are provided to help couples do the work of strengthening intimacy themselves.

This edited volume conceptualises and empirically analyses the ‘ecotourism-extraction nexus’ within the context of broader rural and livelihood changes in the places where these activities occur. The volume’s central premise is that these seemingly contradictory activities are empirically and conceptually more alike than often imagined, and that they share common ground in ethnographic lived experiences in rural settings and broader political economic structures of power and control.

The book offers theoretical reflections on why ecotourism and natural resource extraction are systematically decoupled, and epistemologically and analytically re-links them through ethnographic case studies drawing on research from around the world. It should be of interest to students and professionals engaged in the disciplines of geography, anthropology and development studies.

In this collection, international contributors come together to discuss how qualitative and quantitative methods can be used in psychotherapy research. The book considers the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, and recognises how each method can enhance our understanding of psychotherapy.

About the Author

Wolfgang Lutz is Full Professor and Chair of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Department of Psychology as well as Director of the Clinical Training Program and the Outpatient Research Clinic at the University of Trier, Germany. He is Editor of Psychotherapy Research and on the editorial board of several journals in the field, such as Cognitive Therapy and Research. He has published widely on outcome management in psychotherapy, therapist effects and the prediction of treatment progress for individual patients.

Sarah Knox is Professor and Director of Training for the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program in the College of Education at Marquette University, Milwaukee, USA. She is Co-Editor-in-Chief for Counselling Psychology Quarterly, and has served on the editorial board of several journals. She also publishes extensively on the psychotherapy process, as well as on training and supervision.
