The Qur'an and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions (Routledge Studies in the Qur'an), by Emran El-Badawi

This book is a study of related passages found in the Arabic Qur’ān and the Aramaic Gospels, i.e. the Gospels preserved in the Syriac and Christian Palestinian Aramaic dialects. It builds upon the work of traditional Muslim scholars, including al-Biqā‘ī (d. ca. 808/1460) and al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505), who wrote books examining connections between the Qur’ān on the one hand, and Biblical passages and Aramaic terminology on the other, as well as modern western scholars, including Sidney Griffith who argue that pre-Islamic Arabs accessed the Bible in Aramaic.

The Qur’ān and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions examines the history of religious movements in the Middle East from 180-632 CE, explaining Islam as a response to the disunity of the Aramaic speaking churches. It then compares the Arabic text of the Qur’ān and the Aramaic text of the Gospels under four main themes: the prophets; the clergy; the divine; and the apocalypse. Among the findings of this book are that the articulator as well as audience of the Qur’ān were monotheistic in origin, probably bilingual, culturally sophisticated and accustomed to the theological debates that raged between the Aramaic speaking churches.

Arguing that the Qur’ān’s teachings and ethics echo Jewish-Christian conservatism, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Religion, History, and Literature.

'Gospel according to Mohamed?'
By Kindle Customer
El-Badawi makes a valid case proving the influence of the Aramaic gospels in the Qur'an. But at times one has the feeling he seems to imply that the Qur'an is 'the gospel according to Mohamed', which it is not. Badawi ignores the Jewish element in the Qur'an considerably. According to Simon Schama "Himyarite-Arabic Judaism may have been, in a deep sense, the direct parent of Islam, for it makes no sense historically to classify Muhammad’s core doctrines as anything but essentially Judaic – evident in the indivisibility of the one unseen omnipotent God (referred to in Himyarite and Arabian Judaism, after all, as ‘rahman, the all-merciful and compassionate who art in heaven and earth’); the coming of the Last Days (a central belief of the Qumran community); the hatred of idolatry; the righteous commandment of charity (sadaaqa in Arabic, tzedaka in Hebrew); the strict prohibition not only against pork but also against consuming meat with its living blood still in the flesh; the insistence on ritual washing and purification, especially before prayer ... were all standard Jewish practice".
So are we getting here a Muslim scripture based on Christianity and Muslim ritual based on Judaism? Also I would like to know when the author refers to the Diatessaron, given the original is lost, is he referring to the extant Arabic translation or what? And does the Arabic translation of the Diatessaron have any echos in the Qur'an given the original was in Aramaic?

Being politically correct in adoration of the academia!
By Ibrahim
On pages 9 & 10, the author says that the outright conflation of Mary the mother of Christ (Q 5:17) on the one hand with Mary the daughter of Amram (‘imrān; Q 66:12) or sister of Aaron (Q 19:28) should not immediately be viewed as contradictions, but rather a “creative tension” imposed on the reader by the text.

Creative tension, Emran? Why don't you call it as it is and say it was a contradiction? What is creative about confusing me by giving two contradictory statements?

Review

Rhonda Phillips, Bruce Seifer, and Ed Antczak have written about sustainable economic and community development from a great point of view. They have actually done it. Based on their extensive experience in Burlington, Vermont, a city of 40,000 in Northwestern New England with a long history of commercial and industrial development, the three authors have put together a terrific combination of theory and practice in writing about this popular and elusive goal. This is a scholarly work and a how to manual wrapped together, and it has a happy ending. Burlington is fast becoming one of the most sustainable and livable cities on the planet. Howard Dean, former Vermont Governor 1991-2003

If you want to actually know how to build a great and vibrant community, here's the down-and-dirty details from the people who've done it. Absolutely essential! Bill McKibben, author, Oil and Honey: the Education of an Unlikely Activist

Burlington is one of those places that offers both opportunity and inspiration to its residents and businesses. This book provides insight into how community inclusion and vision became business as usual in this small city…with remarkable results. Jerry Greenfield, Co-Founder, Ben and Jerry's

Burlington is an amazing city, with innovations that make the mind race. How did they do all this? Their successes in creating one of the country's most economically viable cities isn't born of luck, nor is it the work of socialist, ice-cream eating hippies. It is the product of hard work, focus and a fierce commitment to the power of community. The authors have penned a book that should be read by everybody who is working for a new economic vision for America. College students, social entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, city administrators and every elected leader in America. Our economic recovery won't be achieved by big projects or multinational businesses. The future isn't in that direction. As Burlington proves, it's as easy as looking in your own backyard. Robert Egger, President LA Kitchen & CForward www.lakitchen.org

This is a truly invaluable book! Building upon the exemplary experience of Burlington, Vermont it offers real guidance on how to achieve sustainability, community wealth-building, worker-ownership, and democratic control. A must read for practioners, scholars and students concerned with rebuilding the American system from the ground up on strong principles anchored in strong communities. Gar Alperovitz, Lionel R. Bauman Professor of Political Economy at the University of Maryland, and author, What Then Must We Do?

In an era of a dysfunctional federal government, Sustainable Communities: Creating a Durable Local Economy reminds us that change at the local level is possible and that we can all be the better for it. Phillips, Seifer and Antczak document a remarkable adventure set in Burlington, Vermont which demonstrates how indigenous leadership coupled with a strong sense of community can make a difference. They have a written a playbook for transformational change that matters and which can be sustained. Nicolas P. Retsinas, Director Emeritus, Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies

Sustainable Communities represents a groundswell of local initiatives; a bottom-up alternative that recaptures the creativity of civic spirit, and the melding of practice and vision. Vermont and Burlington in particular have been blessed with leaders committed to building a community that works for all, and does it with a lively spirit. Bruce Seifer has spent decades as one of those leaders, and Sustainable Communities: Creating a Durable Local Economy delivers on its promise, offering inspiring and practical lessons on what works, the application to other towns and cities, and even some implications for the nation. Paul Freundlich, Founder and President Emeritus, 'Green/Co-op America'

This book tells the story of one of our best models of a sustainable and desirable community in the US. We desperately need these models and we even more desperately need to spread the word about how it happened and what we can learn from it. The world is approaching a tipping point and with the help of models and books like this we can help it tip into something much better. Robert Costanza Chair in Public Policy, Crawford School of Public Policy, The Australian National University, Canberra

We are in DEEP SHIFT! Sustainable Communities is an essential and practical guide to building resilient, equitable and lively communities that will be well positioned for the economic and ecological changes ahead. The Burlington VT story is inspiring and replicable. Chuck Collins, Institute for Policy Studies and the Resilience Circle network (localcircles.org), Boston, MA

A beautifully organized how-to-book demonstrating the many ways municipal governments can work hand-in-hand with business and engaged citizens to build a local economy that is green, fair and fun. This real-life working model offers an invaluable tool to the localist movement. Judy Wicks, Co-founder of BALLE and author, Good Morning, Beautiful Business.

Sustainable Communities is more than a case study or how to guide to make your own ‘durable local economy’ for those already engaged in community development. The City of Burlington, VT itself is an inspiring story. Perched on the northern shores of Lake Champlain, it has become a beacon for those looking for fresh ideas, new business models, and the keys to creative, fun neighborhoods. The real take away for all of us who care about the places where we live, work and play is this: it all starts with, revolves around, and depends on people. Sustainable communities engage people at all levels and sectors - social, cultural, environmental, political. I have seen it work in my own backyard, Bath, ME, recognized as one of the 'Best Small Cities in America'. Read this book; you may be inspired to unleash your own inner ‘civic entrepreneur’ and contribute to making where you live a more durable, sustainable place. Eloise Vitelli, Arrowsic, Maine (Just across the river from Bath)-Director of Program and Policy Development, Maine Centers for Women, Work, and Community

This informative and detailed book provides insight, examples, and, best of all, hope – about the possibilities of creating a strong, equitable and inclusive local economy. Well-written with many cases, examples and practical information, the authors draw on years of experience to show how to build an economy that works for the private sector, the public sector and residents of the community. The book will certainly appeal to community and economic development practitioners both within and outside the United States. Michael Swack, Faculty Director, Center on Social Innovation and Finance, The Carsey Institute, University of New Hampshire

For 30 years, Burlington Vermont has been intentionally making its economy stronger and more resilient. Here is the detailed back-story: rigorous attention to existing local employers, affirmative entrepreneurship aid to single mothers and immigrants, employee ownership assistance, import substitution, cultivation of environmental resources, creation and preservation of farmland and local farm-consumer linkages, birthing two dozen specialized non-profits, promotion of arts and culture, post-industrial place-making, strategic and sparing use of incentives―and marketing the resulting successes! Every local official or activist seeking inspiration should explore this book. Greg LeRoy, Executive Director, Good Jobs First, Washington, DC

Burlington Vermont may be the best model we have for the Next Economy (the one we need to replace the one we've got, which just isn't working, plain and simple, for our planet and most of the people on it). This is a wonderful story about combining enlightened community development, strong civic partnerships, and 30 years of hard work to assemble the components of a restorative economy for the future. John Abrams, President and CEO, South Mountain Co., Inc. and author, Companies We Keep.

For more than a decade I've admired the authors and their leadership in Burlington. Theirs is an example of a community being the change that's needed. And now I'm so grateful for this book, which lays out for all of us, a framework and the essence of what it takes to build a durable local economy. Michelle Long, Executive Director, BALLE: Be a Localist

Economic development is a field largely populated by charlatans hooked on attracting and retaining global business. But slowly, inexorably, an alternative school of thought is emerging on the virtues of local small business, and Rhonda Phillips, Bruce Seifer, and Ed Antczak are among its most important theorists and practitioners. Sustainable Communities is a fabulous distillation of what really works. The transformation of Burlington, Vermont, into one of the nation's most successful and resilient municipal economies should be required reading for economic developers and development-minded policymakers, funders, and academics worldwide. Michael Shuman, author of Local Dollars, Local Sense

This is a must read for every public official, especially town managers, mayors, administrators and select men and women who want a view of the possible in leading positive change in their communities, creating livable jobs, and using their powers as elected or appointed representatives to offer the Municipality writ large as an organizing catalyst to important economic, social and environmental outcomes as if people mattered. Historically, community-based economic development and CDCs (community development corporations) arose in the civil rights era of the 1960s as an antidote to the failure of municipal government to serve as a locus of economic opportunity and enfranchisement of people and communities out of the economic mainstream. The authors' book turns this fact of history on its head with a real life historical documentary of the Municipality of Burlington, Vermont’s record of practice and policy of community-based economic development.  Springing from sound economics and redefinition of a return on investment to include both the social and environmental benefits to be gained, whether from mainstreet small business shops featuring locally-made goods and foods, affordable housing, or high quality and environmentally-sound manufacturing ventures, the book chronicles the important work of the town’s Community and Economic Development Office (CEDO). Its cast of public officials led the town into a variety of partnerships with the private as well as nonprofit third sector and now the so-called fourth sector of social enterprises, yielding a picture of how a municipality can help build sustainable, healthy and "resilient" communities – that is, communities that can bounce back if the people are engaged. Ron Phillips, president, CEI ~Capital for Opportunity & Change, Wiscasset, Maine

Worth a read
By A.P. Johnston
"Sustainable Communities" is a sort of participant observer case study, a brag sheet, and an empirically based if ideologically driven approach towards theory-building and implementation. However described, it has a point of view that is worth considering (e.g., a broad and inclusive concept of economic development) and an abundance of helpful, practitioner-based insights about what it takes to get a long-term vision implemented. Clearly the authors are proud of what their small city has accomplished over the past 30 years. On the other hand, there is way more descriptive detail than needed (or wanted) to make it a helpful and insightful book on economic development. But worth a read.

Read this if you are a fan of Bernie Sanders
By Amazon Customer
If you are a serious politico or a fan of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, you have to read this book. It is an inside view on how Burlington, Vermont became one of the most livable cities in the country under a progressive administration. The book is geared more towards policy wonks interested in replicating the many sustainable development initiatives created during Bernie's tenure, but it will offer any politico many interesting avenues of research to explore or exploit in the name of moving progressive initiatives forward. It is an excellent survey for any academic setting involving economics, public policy, community development, planning or politics as it balances concrete how to policy data within a unique administrative context. People interesting positive change in their own communities will find an incredible amount of valuable information and contacts to act upon and get excited about. I strongly recommend this for anyone seriously interested in moving sustainable practices forward.

Exercising social conscience in the service of community development
By JD Heyer
Sustainable Communities has a common-sense, thoughtful approach that will encourage community activists to imitate ideas learned while using ethical principles to generate their own inspired plans. "Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything" - George Bernard Shaw. This book is a huge source of encouragement and gives a big nudge into new thinking for every motivated citizen. Sustainable Communities is foundational writing for socially responsible community leaders! Everyone from every part of local society has a role and benefits from this change process.
I'm excited to learn of the book's successes and the stories that it's readers tell in the coming years. The authors are fomenting revolution of the very best kind. I've watched it. It is good.

Review

"This edition continues the tradition of clearly explaining foundational international management concepts and processes, and illustrating them with exemplary real-world examples. The chapters emphasize the increasing interdependency of both companies and national economies, and the perpetual importance of refining one’s cross-cultural skills." - John P. Orr, Ph.D., Webster University, Walker School of Business & Technology, USA

"The 5th edition of International Management by Dean McFarlin and Paul Sweeney is a truly superb textbook that can be used in executive education courses, graduate-level courses, or advanced undergraduate classes in the areas of management, organizational behavior, and/or international business. This textbook is particularly strong in the areas of cross-cultural management, international business ethics, global negotiations, conflict management, motivation and leadership, managing international and multicultural teams, and rewarding and evaluating employees. But -- most importantly -- it covers the most current research and topics in international management from a cultural and strategic perspective." - Douglas M. McCabe, Georgetown University, The McDonough School of Business, USA

"Sweeney and McFarlin’s fifth edition of International Management provides new insights into the challenges of operating, managing, and collaborating across national borders and cultural regions of the world. The clear writing style, ample illustrations, and integrative cases allow students to synthesize issues and evaluate strategies in effective and practical ways." - Clive Muir, Stephen F. Austin State University, USA

"The compelling, illustrative examples of how companies are tackling international management issues and the end-of-chapter experiential features makes this a very engaging textbook for international management courses. The self-assessments and controversial case examples are likely to spark exciting classroom discussions." - Stuart Sidle, Ph.D., University of New Haven, USA

Learning and Teaching Early Math: The Learning Trajectories Approach (Studies in Mathematical Thinking and Learning Series), by Douglas H.

In this important book for pre- and in-service teachers, early math experts Douglas Clements and Julie Sarama show how "learning trajectories" help diagnose a child’s level of mathematical understanding and provide guidance for teaching. By focusing on the inherent delight and curiosity behind young children’s mathematical reasoning, learning trajectories ultimately make teaching more joyous. They help teachers understand the varying levels of knowledge exhibited by individual students, which in turn allows them to better meet the learning needs of all children. Using straightforward, no-nonsense language, this book summarizes the current research about how children learn mathematics, and how to build on what children already know to realize more effective teaching.

This second edition of Learning and Teaching Early Math remains the definitive, research-based resource to help teachers understand the learning trajectories of early mathematics and become quintessential professionals.

Updates to the new edition include:

• Explicit connections between Learning Trajectories and the new Common Core State Standards.

• New coverage of patterns and patterning.

• Incorporation of hundreds of recent research studies.

Review

“The book’s strengths are many. The in-depth coverage of the mathematical concepts and the related research are invaluable. But notably the greatest strength, in my view, is the inclusion of the developmental trajectories. I think these are an invaluable reference for anyone teaching mathematics to young children, and I encourage my students to all hold onto this text for reference when teaching.”―Barbrina Ertle, Department of Education, Adelphi University

Praise for the 1st Edition:

“What math is most important for young learners? What concepts and skills are foundational for their reaching the next level of math understanding? And how can teachers help children grasp each new idea and remain enthusiastic about math? These are the key questions in this incredibly valuable book from Douglas Clements and Julie Sarama. For each topic area, they clearly describe the developmental path, or ‘learning trajectory,’ along which children move to develop mathematical concepts and skills. And they offer evidence-based guidelines and instructional activities in an engaging, straightforward way that reflects their deep respect for, and understanding of, what teachers do.” ―Carol Copple, Former Director, Publications and Initiatives in Educational Practice, National Association for the Education of Young Children

"One of the book's greatest strengths is the focus on 'Developmental Trajectories', which are a little like 'schemas'. Learning or developmental progressions that children follow as they are learning something - for example, from rolling, crawling, walking, skipping and jumping, to running and moving with increased speed and dexterity." - Martine Horvath, eye magazine

Governance for Pro-Poor Urban Development: Lessons from Ghana (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies), by Franklin Obeng-Odoom

The world development institutions commonly present 'urban governance' as an antidote to the so-called 'urbanisation of poverty' and 'parasitic urbanism' in Africa.

Governance for Pro-Poor Urban Development is a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the meaning, nature, and effects of 'urban governance' in theory and in practice, with a focus on Ghana, a country widely regarded as an island of good governance in the sub region. The book illustrates how diverse groups experience urban governance differently and contextualizes how this experience has worsened social differentiation in cities.

This book will be of great interest to students, teachers, and researchers in development studies, and highly relevant to anyone with an interest in urban studies, geography, political economy, sociology, and African studies.

Review
"…I consider this work a testament of exemplary scholarship. The analyses and arguments are clear while the surveys are insightful and workmanlike. The closing commentaries and conclusions are logical, insightful and especially informative. I find the content and presentation to be original and constitute a significant contribution to the extant body of knowledge on the political economy of urbanization not only in Ghana but also Africa and the developing world in general." – Ambe J. Njoh, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, USA.

"…It is a solid piece of research and an excellent synthesis of the literature…The work is very strong in deploying a meso level analysis to understanding various policy arenas. A major contribution …is that it understands and links a meso level political economy lens with a meso level urban analysis….It is very impressive how widely read the author is and how deep an understanding he has of diverse literatures. ...His command and grasp of the literature is truly breathtaking and outstanding." – Richard Grant, Professor of Geography and Regional Studies and Director of Urban Studies, University of Miami, USA

"Given the recent emphasis on and popularisation of the concept of urban governance, this [book] makes a substantial and original contribution to debates on its usefulness and its effectiveness, notably through the detailed case-study of Ghana and through the application of a political economy perspective by which to undertake the analysis and evaluation. An important aspect of this originality is the development of an appropriate analytical framework through combining elements of institutional and Marxist political economy." – Gordon Crawford, Professor of Development Politics, University of Leeds, UK.

"The book provides a better understanding of urbanization in Ghana, pulling together in a single volume the many different and complex aspects of the phenomenon. Researchers, students, practitioners, and policymakers interested in urban development in Ghana and Africa will certainly find this book a useful resource." – George Owusu, Department of Geography & Resource Development, and Institute of Statistical, Social & Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana

"[T]he book is a brilliant, thoughtfully-produced and pragmatic depiction of the urban challenge in Ghana and the failure of neoliberal driven urban governance policies in addressing it. The extensive coverage given to urban employment, poverty and inequality, health and sanitation, transport, housing and land, in particular, makes the book a valuable read. I am convinced that I will be returning to Governance for Pro-Poor Urban Development: Lessons from Ghana frequently as a reference text. Students, researchers and policy makers in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Afric also stand to benefit from the issues that have been excellently articulated. The book is highly recommended." – UrbanAfica, Robert Lawrence Afutu-Kotey, University of Professional Studies, Ghana

"[T]he book is solid in its analysis and a valuable contribution to understand contemporary local government and urbanization in Africa. It is a publication not to be missed for those who want to think about the urban future of African countries, which are, together with India and Indonesia, the next wave of a large scale of urbanization." – Jose A. Puppim de Oliveira, Public Administration and Development

Outstanding work...
By fafar
An outstanding work on interpretation of the reality in the world of social & political misconduct in many of tired world countries due to the lack of social awareness and also an incorrect curriculum of social & economic strategies & policies by Government authorities... And never the less the strong influence of cultural factors in societies such as in Ghana. This is why in the new world of 21 Centuries in order to survive, sometimes we need to leave The Tribe behind!!!!
Excellent research and magnificent conclusion

Wish-fulfilment in Philosophy and Psychoanalysis: The tyranny of desire (Psychoanalytic Explorations), by Tamas Pataki

Wish-fulfilment as a singular means of satisfying ineluctable desire is a pivotal concept in classical psychoanalysis. Freud argued that it was the thread that united dreams, daydreams, phantasy, omnipotent thinking, neurotic and some psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, art, myth, and religious illusions. The concept's theoretical exploration has been largely neglected within psychoanalysis since, but contemporary philosophers have recognised it as providing an explanatory model for much of the kind of irrational behaviour so problematic for psychiatry, social psychology and the philosophy of mind.

Although critically neglected in contemporary psychological and psychoanalytic thought, the concept remains clinically fundamental, under different labels: it encompasses the processes of omnipotent phantasy, symbolic or substitutive satisfaction, actualisation in transference and acting out, symptom formation and defenses such as projective identification. Wish-fulfilment can be shown to be a specifically psychoanalytic compartment of a common-sense psychological theory of action that illuminates not just clinical material but also the paradoxes of irrationality – such as weakness of will and self-deception – that preoccupy philosophers.

The first half of this book develops a comprehensive and novel theory of wish-fulfilment, explores its radical implications for the structure of mind, and locates it against the backdrop of both contemporary psychoanalytic and philosophical thought. In the second half, the book applies the theory to illuminate important features of self-deception and delusion, religion, insanity defences, creative writing and the exclusion of mind and intention in the biological drift of modern psychiatry.

The book will be essential to philosophers of mind, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, social theorists, and students in these disciplines; as well as readers interested in understanding how the mind works in mental illness, self-deception, religion, and creative writing.

Review

'At times Pataki takes his argument into very difficult terrain, which presents a challenge to someone, like this reviewer, with little formal philosophical training. This book will appeal more to the philosophers than the psychoanalysts, and yet I think there are real potential rewards for the psychoanalyst willing to make the effort to follow Pataki’s argument. Not the least of these rewards is an opportunity to strengthen one’s ‘conceptual analysis muscle’, in the course of the exercise! ... Pataki has attempted an interpenetration of psychoanalytic and philosophical understandings without deterioration on either side, and in this I think he has largely succeeded.' - Paul Schimmel in The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, 2015

'some of the richest material in the book comes when Pataki is demonstrating the explanatory payoffs of his theory of wish-fulfillment. Indeed, one of the benefits of Pataki's account is that it can illuminate a much wider range of phenomena than is possible if wish-fulfillment is deflated to be a purely causal phenomenon. In the second half of the book Pataki goes on to apply his theory to delusion and self-deception, the psychological origins of religious belief, creative writing, and the insanity defense in jurisprudence. Indeed, it may be that the light that Pataki's theory is able to cast on a wide range of psychological and cultural phenomena leads the reader to bite the bullet and accept that agency goes much deeper than we have traditionally thought to be the case. In any case, this is a deep and interesting book, and although it is in some ways unfashionable in the context of the contemporary literature it is nonetheless quite compelling in the way it presents the case for the centrality of wish-fulfillment in human mindedness.' - Andrew C. Sims, Deakin University, Australia, in Frontiers in Psychology, November 2014

Employment and Inclusive Development (Routledge Studies in Development Economics), by Rizwanul Islam, Iyanatul Islam

Issues relating to employment and labour have once again come to the fore of global policy debates in the wake of the widespread unemployment that has accompanied the current financial crisis. In the developing world, there is a growing realization that productive employment promotion and social protection have to be at the core of inclusive growth and development.

This book supports the view that employment is a cross-cutting issue shaped by macroeconomic and microeconomic policy interventions, and provides a capacious framework to analyse the complexity of this global debate. It covers a wide range of issues that have received insufficient attention in the discourse of development and labour economics. These include the impact of macroeconomic policies on employment, labour rights, the development of human capabilities and employability, youth employment, the benefits and costs of labour market flexibility, and the importance of social protection for all.

This important book aims at filling this gap by revisiting old debates and reconnecting them to the contemporary context, combining analyses with relevant empirical evidence. It will appeal to a diverse readership of academic institutions and think-tanks, international organizations, bilateral donors working on development issues and policy-makers in developing countries.

Improving Intelligence Analysis: Bridging the Gap between Scholarship and Practice (Studies in Intelligence), by Stephen Marrin

This book on intelligence analysis written by intelligence expert Dr. Stephen Marrin argues that scholarship can play a valuable role in improving intelligence analysis.

Improving intelligence analysis requires bridging the gap between scholarship and practice. Compared to the more established academic disciplines of political science and international relations, intelligence studies scholarship is generally quite relevant to practice. Yet a substantial gap exists nonetheless. Even though there are many intelligence analysts, very few of them are aware of the various writings on intelligence analysis which could help them improve their own processes and products. If the gap between scholarship and practice were to be bridged, practitioners would be able to access and exploit the literature in order to acquire new ways to think about, frame, conceptualize, and improve the analytic process and the resulting product. This volume contributes to the broader discussion regarding mechanisms and methods for improving intelligence analysis processes and products. It synthesizes these articles into a coherent whole, linking them together through common themes, and emphasizes the broader vision of intelligence analysis in the introduction and conclusion chapters.

The book will be of great interest to students of intelligence studies, strategic studies, US national security, US foreign policy, security studies and political science in general,as well as professional intelligence analysts and managers.

Analysis in Isolation from Reality
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
This book is insanely expensive. The author of the book has material published online that I recommend be accessed and considered before making any investment here. One starting point is my list to 2011 article and my lengthy comment, easily found by looking for

Stephen Marrin: Evaluating the Quality of Intelligence Analysis: By What (Mis) Measure? With Comment by Robert Steele

This is a book, that like economists trapped on a desert island with a can of food and no can-opener, begin their plan with "assume a can-opener." Now having said that, I must also give the author credit: this is as good as it gets at the PhD level when writing in isolation from decades of experience. This is the "clean room" version of the craft of analysis.

Here is a short extract from my review of the article that was built into this book:

ROBERT STEELE: Interesting, certainly worth reading, but divorced from the fundamentals and out of touch with the real masters. Any publication that fails to cite Jack Davis, the dean of analytic tradecraf in the English language, is fatally flawed. Of course it would help if one were also in touch with the "new rules for the new craft of intelligence," but that may be too much to expect from a junior academic with limited real-world analytic experience who seems intent on citing only "approved" sources-a lack of source integrity that is also fatal. The article assumes that the four preconditions for sound analytics exist, and since they do not, at least in the US and UK and most other government intelligence communities, it is necessary to spell them out. Analysts are toads absent the following:

01 All-source collection including open source collection in 183 languages in near real-time-collection that is relevant, timely, and focused, not collection of convenience. It must also comprehend, collect, and present true cost economics with geospatial attributes at every datum point.

02) Back office and desktop analytic tools that integrate in one single open source package the eighteen functionalities identified by Gordon Oehler, Dennis McCormick, Diane Webb, and a handful of others in 1985. This still is not available today-Computer-Aided Tools for the Analysis of Science & Technology (CATALYST).

03) Deep personal knowledge of relevant history, culture, and language(s) pertinent to the matter at hand, and inclusive of a broad globlal multinational, multiagency, multidisciplinary, multidomain information-sharing and sense-making network (M4IS2)-the US security goons are nowhere near being able to comprehend the new security paradigm that demands full-spectrum human intelligence (HUMINT) across all slices, nationalities, and socio-economic ideo-cultural strata; and

04) An analytic model that is holistic, comprehensive, and centered on the public interest, at a minimum integrating the ten high-level threats to humanity, the twelve core policies that must be integrated; and the eight demographic challengers that will define the future with or without the USA. There are at least three models that could be usefully integrated: the revolution model, the expeditionary environment model, and the strategic analytic model.

Somewhat paradoxically, since I emphasize that intelligence (decision-support) is about outputs rather than inputs, it bears mention that the analytic process that produces intelligence is only as good as its inputs, its environment, and its receiving decision-makers. If the receiving decision-maker lacks integrity, then Paul Pillar in Intelligence and U.S. Foreign Policy: Iraq, 9/11, and Misguided Reform is absolutely right: no amount of intelligence with integrity can overcome policy without integrity, with ONE exception: if the intelligence with integrity is placed immediately and visibly in the public domain.

Jack Davis and his work are easily accessed by searching for the term "analytic tradecraft." My own work in this area over the past 30 years is easily found online, and catalogued at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog. It merits comment that there are eight "tribes" or communities of intelligence as decision-support, and all of them -- a few elements not-withstanding -- are incoherent and ineffective: academic, civil society, commerce, government, law enforcement, media, military, and non-governmental/non-profit. The biggest problem we have is the complete fragmentation of all of the disciplines and sub-disciplines; combine that with the iron curtains among the tribes, the bamboo curtains among organizations within each tribe, and the plastic curtains between individuals, and you have a morass that no amount of good "analytics" is going to master.

I strongly recommend the new book by Routledge, Routledge Companion to Intelligence Studies.

Below are nine books I recommend centered on analysis and the pathologies of analysis, all reasonably priced. There is also some good work emerging under the search term "evidence-based".

Strategic Intelligence and Statecraft: Selected Essays (Brassey's Intelligence & National Security Library)
Lost Promise
Informing Statecraft
None So Blind: A Personal Account of the Intelligence Failure in Vietnam
Who the Hell Are We Fighting?: The Story of Sam Adams and the Vietnam Intelligence Wars
Analysis Without Paralysis: 12 Tools to Make Better Strategic Decisions (2nd Edition)
Critical Thinking And Intelligence Analysis
Intelligence Analysis: How to Think in Complex Environments (Praeger Security International)

Best wishes to all,
Robert Steele

A useful, interesting and thought-provoking read
By Aleksandra Bielska
This book by Dr. Stephen Marrin presents a thought-provoking analysis of the current state and potential improvements related to the process of intelligence analysis as practiced within the US Intelligence Community. In addition to the discussion about a 'gap' between a practice of intelligence and related scholarship, the book offers new insights into such issues of interest to Intelligence Studies as a relationship between intelligence and social science, a balance between 'art' and 'science' of intelligence analysis, or problems and challenges connected with a process of intelligence analysis in the context of activities undertaken by individual analysts as well as regarding incorporation of these individual efforts into a broader institutional and organizational context. Dr. Marrin promotes the use of analogical thinking as a way to look at the work of intelligence analysts through a prism of experience accumulated by other academic and professional disciplines. In particular, the author of the book explores analogy between intelligence and a medical profession. In these regards, the included analysis not only leads to conclusions which have a practical application and as such can be of special value to intelligence, it can also serve as an inspiration and a source of methodology-related suggestions to those who would like to look at intelligence from the perspective of a discipline other than medicine or, alternatively, would like to look at their professional experience (assuming their expertise relates to a non-intelligence realm) from the perspective of intelligence. All in all, the book represents a truly useful and interesting read and is worth being recommended to both those familiar with the area of Intelligence Studies as well as those who know little about the field and seek to extend their related knowledge.
