They show how globalization, and the competition to achieve global city status, has had a profound effect on all these cities. Tokyo is an archetypal world city. Singapore, Hong Kong and Seoul have acquired world city characteristics. Taipei and Kuala Lumpur have been at the centre of expanding economies in which nationalism and global aspirations have been intertwined and expressed in the built environment. Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai have played key, sometimes competing, roles in China’s rapid economic growth. Bangkok’s amenity economy is currently threatened by political instability, while Jakarta and Manila are the core city-regions of less developed countries with sluggish economies and significant unrealized potential.

But how resilient are these cities to the risks that they face? How can they manage continuing pressures for development and growth while reducing their vulnerability to a range of potential crises? How well prepared are they for climate change? How can they build social capital, so important to a city’s recovery from shocks and disasters? What forms of governance and planning are appropriate for the vast mega-regions that are emerging? And, given the tradition of top-down, centralized, state-directed planning which drove the economic growth of many of these cities in the last century, what prospects are there of them becoming more inclusive and sensitive to the diverse needs of their populations and to the importance of culture, heritage and local places in creating liveable cities?

About the Author

Professor Stephen Hamnett is Emeritus Professor of urban and regional planning at the University of South Australia. He is also a Commissioner of the Environment, Resources and Development Court of South Australia. Stephen’s research interests focus on metropolitan strategic planning and on planning law and governance. He is a member of a number of journal editorial boards, including ‘Built Environment’ and ‘Cities’. Stephen Hamnett has a long record of involvement in planning issues in Asia, including projects on urban and regional development for AusAID and other international agencies in Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Malaysia and elsewhere. His previous books include ‘The Australian Metropolis’ (2000) with Robert Freestone. In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award of the Planning Institute of Australia for outstanding and sustained contributions to planning and planning education.

Professor Dean Forbes is Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor at Flinders University, Adelaide. He
is an urbanist with a special interest in knowledge-based development in contemporary Pacific Asian cities. He was a chief investigator for a recently completed project on strengthening urban slum upgrading and urban governance in Southeast Asia. Dean Forbes is on the editorial boards of Asian Pacific Viewpoint and the International Journal of Knowledge-Based Development, and was an Advisory Board member of the Encyclopedia of Urban Cultures. In 1994 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.His previous appointments include the Australian National University, Monash University and the University of Papua New Guinea. He has worked for AusAID and the Australian Institute of Urban Studies, and has been a consultant to the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Population Fund, International Labour Organization and AusAID.

The book celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Global Ecological Integrity Group and reassesses the basic concept of ecological integrity in order to show how a future beyond catastrophe and disaster is in fact possible, but only if civil society and ultimately legal regimes acknowledge the necessity to consider ecointegrity as a primary factor in decision-making. This is key to the support of basic rights to clean air and water, for halting climate change, and also the basic rights of women and indigenous people. As the authors clearly show, all these rights ultimately depend upon accepting policies that acknowledge the pivotal role of ecological integrity.

However, in the course of the twentieth-century, the meaning of the term shifted towards empowerment and the education of the oppressed. This book explores the several ways in which Popular Education has been theoretically and empirically defined, in several regions of the world, over the last three centuries. About the Author

Sjaak Braster is Associate Professor for Sociology of Education at Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and was Emeritus Professor of History of Education at Utrecht University, The Netherlands from 2003 to 2010. In 1996 he published his Ph.D. thesis on the identity of public education. Previous publications include The Black Box of Schooling. A Cultural History of the Classroom (2011) (with Grosvenor & Del Pozo), and Passion and Pragmatism. The Educational Inspectorate and the Rise and Fall of Classroom Teaching (2011).

Frank Simon, is Professor Emeritus in the Foundations of Education Department at Ghent University, Belgium. His research deals with pre-school and primary education in Belgium (education policy, teacher unions, the teaching profession). For the last decade, he has worked in collaboration with the Centre of the History of Education at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. His research focusses on everyday educational processes and practice, classroom and curriculum history, education and cultural heritage, and Progressive Education, in particular looking at the biography of Ovide Decroly. He was Editor-in-Chief of Paedagogica Historica: International Journal of the History of Education from1992-2007, and chairperson of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE) in 2006-2009.

Ian Grosvenor is Professor of Urban Educational History at the University of Birmingham, UK. He is author of numerous articles and books on racism, education and identity, the visual in educational research, the material culture of education and the history of urban education. Previous publications include include Silences and Images: The Social History of the Classroom (1999) with Martin Lawn and Kate Rousmaniere, The School I’d Like (2003) and School (2008) both with Catherine Burke , Materialities of Schooling (2005) with Martin Lawn and Children and Youth at Risk (2009) with Christine Mayer and Ingrid Lohmann.

Written in an engaging and entertaining style, Nancy Harrington’s Health Communication covers numerous topics frequently unrepresented in health communication work. The metatheoretical emphasis is a strong contribution, and is consistently seen across the various chapters. It is unusual to see a focus on conflicting results in research, but the text again pleases the reader with such an inclusion. The sidebars, pictures, and examples are helpful, informative, and interesting, as are the discussion questions and exercises at the end of each chapter. After reading Harrington’s text, I feel much more prepared for a potential zombie-apocalypse; I think that the reader will also feel much more prepared to participate as a health consumer, provider, or practitioner/researcher. About the Author

David Chan is currently Lee Kuan Yew Fellow, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Behavioural Sciences Institute at Singapore Management University, and Adjunct Principal Scientist at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore. He received his PhD in industrial and organizational psychology from Michigan State University, USA. David’s research includes areas in research methods and data analysis, personnel selection, adaptation to changes and subjective well-being. He is the author of a textbook, Personnel Selection, with Neal Schmitt from Sage (1998). He has served as Editor or board member on several journals. He has received numerous scholarly awards including the Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award and William Owens Scholarly Achievement Award from SIOP. David is a Fellow of APA, APS, SIOP and IAAP.

Change is Inevitable, Adaptability is Required (An Academic Perspective)

As the title of my review suggests, change is inevitable especially in the world of business. It's econ 101; if a business wants to stay competitive or ahead of the curve it has to adapt to changes in society (which are always on the move) and adopt new technology and practices to help foster a fast, efficient, and ultimately prosperous environment. Problem is that many companies lack the psychological know-how in creating an environment that helps the individual employees adapt to new changes fast enough to keep up with company goals. The company may lack proper training, structuring, incentive programs, or even proper equipment that creates an environment that may promote stagnation, lacking morale, or minimalism.

Individual Adaptability to Changes at Work is a compilation of studies and articles by various experts in the field of psychology and HR to help explain different dynamics of individual adaptation to change and their views on the subjects. This is, clearly, an academic read as many casual HR personnel without an academic background will, probably, scratch their heads at the formatting and language. I am no expect but I have an MA in history so I'm familiar with the format and language and was able to follow along fairly well. If anything, this book is NOT for HR or upper-level management so much as setting up the framework for future studies in individual adaptation so it can be run through the scientific gauntlet of academic discourse and latter translated into laymen's speak for everyone else.

For me, it was an interesting read that asserts some of what I've experienced working in retail and vending (two extremely competitive fields in terms of business v. business). This read is not for the feint of mind but if you're inclined to expand your mind and study the employee psyche, I'd recommend you read this text with an open mind and be ready to take it all in.

Science-based data for psychologists and HR supervisors

Psychologists in all fields will enjoy this scientific read. Its focus is on the adaptability of an individual. We all fear change, but in a healthy team setting, we want to be able to fit in to remain in that team and perform at our best. This is more important now that just a few decades ago, when cultural differences were seen as handicaps and undesirable.

This book is a collection from various PhD holders on this topic. Some are more readable than others. The well-written article "Adaptability and Intercultural Interaction in the Work Context, a Cultural tuning perspective" by Kwok Leung and Grand Cheng is one such article. It talks about cultural differences that can arise in the work force and how employees can misinterpret other cultures' behavioral differences such as personal space, eye contact, touching. Not understanding the differences can create tensions when dealing with negotiations, proposals, after-work parties. Even conflict resolution is handled differently across the globe. Understanding these differences makes it easier for superisors, employees and visiting VIPs to better cooperate.

Another interesting article is "Retirement and Adaptability" by Mo Wang and Lee T Penn. Knowing when it's time to leave the work force depends on more than having enough money set aside, it's also knowing what else is available for the person post work-place position. There are other such articles based on scientific data that are more useful for even the lower manager or supervisor to understand and implement at the work force.

There is much scientific data presented here, so this may not be for everyone. It's aimed at psychologists and perhaps Human Resource Managers who may prefer science-based data over a more humanitarian aspect.

Current trends and emerging themes in individual adaptability research

In the 1980s and early 1990s, organizational researchers and practitioners, especially those in personnel selection, began to emphasize the importance of individual adaptability to rapid changes at work. Data were collected seeking good predictors of job performance, but those data collection efforts were limited by the lack of a cohesive theoretical framework.

The articles in this edited collection represent the efforts of various researchers to fill this void. They give a snapshot of the current state of theorizing about adaptability, what constructs have been put forward, how far along are the efforts to assess the internal and external validity of those constructs, what new research frontiers are beckoning, etc.

To get the most out of this collection of theory-heavy but readable articles, readers should have not only an interest in and basic knowledge of organizational psychology, but also some basic understanding of the meaning and importance of the internal and external validity of psychometric tests and how researchers go about obtaining these measures, etc.

All of the articles in this collection are well written and quite readable. A few tend to employ fancy terms and jargons, but they all have something interesting to impart, and are worth a read.

Glen L. Sherman is Associate Vice President and Dean of Student Development at William Paterson University in New Jersey. He received his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Duquesne University, and has previously published two articles in the Journal of College and Character in the area of existential phenomenology.
