This book explores the role of music in the some five hundred feature-length films on the Middle Ages produced between the late 1890s and the present day. Haines focuses on the tension in these films between the surviving evidence for medieval music and the idiomatic tradition of cinematic music. The latter is taken broadly as any musical sound occurring in a film, from the clang of a bell off-screen to a minstrel singing his song. Medieval film music must be considered in the broader historical context of pre-cinematic medievalisms and of medievalist cinema’s main development in the course of the twentieth century as an American appropriation of European culture. The book treats six pervasive moments that define the genre of medieval film: the church-tower bell, the trumpet fanfare or horn call, the music of banquets and courts, the singing minstrel, performances of Gregorian chant, and the music that accompanies horse-riding knights, with each chapter visiting representative films as case studies. These six signal musical moments, that create a fundamental visual-aural core central to making a film feel medieval to modern audiences, originate in medievalist works predating cinema by some three centuries.

The efficient use of natural resources is key to a sustainable economy, and yet the complexities of the physical aspects of resource efficiency are poorly understood. In this challenging book, the author proposes a major advance in our understanding of this topic by analysing resource efficiency and efficiency gains from the perspective of common pool resources, applying this idea particularly to water resources and its use in irrigated agriculture.

The author proposes a novel concept of "the paracommons", through which the savings of increased resource efficiency can be viewed. In effect he asks; "who gets the gain of an efficiency gain?" By reusing, economising and avoiding losses, wastes and wastages, freed up resources are available for further use by four ‘destinations’; the same user, parties directly connected to that user, the wider economy or returned to the common pool. The paracommons is thus a commons of – and competition for – resources salvaged by changes to the efficiency of natural resource systems. The idea can be applied to a range of resources such as water, energy, forests and high-seas fisheries.

Five issues are explored: the complexity of resource use efficiency; the uncertainty of efficiency interventions and outcomes; destinations of freed up losses, wastes and wastages; implications for resource conservation; and the interconnectedness of users and systems brought about by efficiency changes. The book shows how these ideas put efficiency on a par with other dimensions of resource governance and sustainability such as equity, justice, resilience and access.

About the Author

Hilary du Cros is an Honorary Research Fellow, University of New Brunswick, Canada. She has a unique perspective on tourism, heritage and arts management after 30 years as an academic and consultant in the Asia-Pacific Region. Books include The Arts and Events with Lee Jolliffe (Routledge 2014) and Cultural Heritage Management in China with Y.S.F Lee (Routledge 2009).

Bob McKercher is a Professor of Tourism at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has wide ranging research interests focused around special interest tourism markets, product development and consumer behaviour. He received his PhD from the University of Melbourne in Australia, a Masters degree from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and his undergraduate degree from York University in Toronto, Canada. Prior to entering academia, he worked in a variety of operational and advocacy position in the Canadian tourism industry.

About the Author

Nalin Mehta is Joint Editor of South Asian History and Culture (Routledge) and Visiting Senior Fellow at the Asia Research institute and Institute of South Asian Studies, National University Singapore. His books include the award-winning India on Television: How Satellite News Channels Changed the Way We Think and Act (Asian Publishing Award 2009) and most recently he has co-authored the best-selling Sellotape Legacy: Delhi and the Commonwealth Games. Formerly Deputy News Editor and anchor at Times Now, as a journalist he has covered pivotal events in Gujarat for nearly a decade, including the earthquake of 2001, the 2002 riots and assembly elections in 2002 and 2007. He writes a weekly column for Mumbai Mirror and its sister publications.

Mona G. Mehta is Assistant Professor of Politics at Scripps College in Claremont, California, where she teaches politics of South Asia and comparative politics. Her research examines the processes by which a functioning democracy and a vibrant civil society have paradoxically become implicated in producing exclusion and Hindu-Muslim conflict in Gujarat. She has a Ph.D from the University of Chicago where she has taught courses in social science theory and identity politics in South Asia.

About the Author

Anne Coles is a Research Associate at the International Gender Studies Centre, Oxford University, UK. She was previously a senior social development adviser in Britain’s Department for International Development and has chaired two development NGOs. Her research interests include migration, people’s responses to harsh environments, and public health. Recent publications include Gender, Water and Development, Gender and Family among Transnational Professionals (as co-editor and contributor), and Windtower (2007, reprinted 2009).

Leslie Gray is a geographer and Executive Director of the Environmental Studies Institute at Santa Clara University, USA. Her current research considers agrarian and environmental change in Burkina Faso and food justice in California. She has published articles on environmental policy, land degradation, and women’s access to resources in Burkina Faso and Sudan. This research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Fulbright/IIE and the Social Science Research Council.

Janet Momsen has taught at universities in the UK, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the USA. She is Emerita Professor of Geography at the University of California, Davis, USA and was a Board member of AWID. She is currently a Senior Research Associate in the Oxford University Centre for the Environment, a Research Associate in the International Gender Studies Centre at Oxford University, and a Trustee of the development NGO, INTRAC. She has published over 170 articles in refereed journals and chapters in books and authored or edited 18 books.

This is the perfect companion to Wilder's books.

*I received a copy of this book at no cost to me to facilitate my review.* If you're a lifelong fan like I am, or if you are planning to teach Wilder's books, you really need to read this biography. If you are not a fan, I can honestly tell you that anyone interested in the American west will enjoy this incredibly thorough book about Wilder's life. She lived during a formative period in our history, and the biography is engaging and well written enough to stand on its own or to serve as an introduction to Wilder's fiction.

Ketcham excels at clarifying things for a modern understanding. Both in the way the Ingalls family lived and on the subject of the contemporary treatment of US policies and actions regarding Native Americans. Deconstructing the novels as she goes, Ketcham creates the perfect counterpoint for anyone who wants to teach these books while addressing those concerns. (Homeschoolers, take note!)

This biography is a true treasure, and never less so than in the hearty and fulfilling treatment of the later years of Wilder's life. After the books leave "Laura" at age 20, the modern reader is left to wonder "what came next." Web searches have turned up only tidbits that further whet my appetite to know more about her amazing later life. Ketcham's biography at last fills in the rest of the story. As a little girl, I felt like I knew the "Laura" of schoolgirl days and wanted her for a friend. As a woman and a mom, I feel now, through Ketcham's work, that I know the mother and the remarkable human being she later became.

I am a huge Laura Ingalls Wilder fan and I have all the books written about her. This was a very informative and interesting book about her life. I also have "Pioneer Girl" the annotated autobiography, which is fantastic also. I would say this book by Sally Ketcham is a great addition for every Laura Ingalls Wilder fan! A great read!

Sallie's insight into Laura makes her so real, giving me a whole new appreciation behind the strong women who helped shape the midwest or the Dakota's into what they are today. About the Author

Rob F. Poell is Professor of Human Resource Development at Tilburg University, The Netherlands. Rob has published widely in leading HRD, management and organization journals. He served as Editor-in-Chief for Human Resource Development International from 2010-2012 and was a twice-elected member on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Human Resource Development

Tonette S. Rocco is Full Professor and Graduate Program Director of Adult Education and Human Resource Development at Florida International University, USA. She is a former board member of the HR Certification Institute and the American Society for Training and Development, and is an award-winning author with over 200 publications

Gene L. Roth is Emeritus Distinguished Teaching Professor of Adult and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University, USA. His research interests include learning to learn, international adult education, workplace learning, and adult learning. He is a past president of the Academy of Human Resource Development

Great read!

I have really enjoyed this book. It has been insightful and a great piece of reference, not just for me as a doctoral student, but as a person who is both an employee and supervisor. For anyone who has ever been an employee or supervisor, this book would be a great contribution to your library. Extremely written by the top scholars not in only in the field, but around the world, this book has provided me with different perspectives on what Human Resource Development and Adult Education is, and the similarities they share!
