This volume provides a systematic and cross-regional analysis of radicalisation, militancy and violence in West Africa.

Concern about terrorism in, or from, West Africa, has been recognised in academic research, and the adoption of militarised approaches to addressing it questioned. However, the basis for that questioning – the need to investigate factors such as the historical and socio-economic roots of militancy – is not developed, nor is it substantiated in existing studies. The significant impact of religiously motivated radicalisation and violence in West Africa upon international security makes it essential to understand the issues of militancy and violence in the region.

In this volume, the authors draw upon empirical research in West Africa to develop understanding in these areas. Over the course of several chapters written by leading experts in the field, the book successfully blends historical and conceptual analysis with new empirical research gathered from focus group discussions and research interviews. Each of these core studies is structured around five interrelated issues: tracing the antecedents of radicalisation; monitoring trends; identifying actors; anticipating possibilities; and analysing the strength of existing preventive mechanisms.

This book will be of much interest to students of African security, African politics, radicalisation, political Islam, war and conflict studies and security studies in general.

About the Author

Barry McCarthy, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, professor of psychology, and certified sex and marital therapist. He has published extensively on couples and sexuality and has done more than 350 professional workshops nationally and internationally. He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2009 Smart Marriages® Impact Award.

Emily McCarthy has been working with her husband, Barry, for years, and together they have authored 11 books. She has a degree in speech communication, and her writing provides a balanced, humanistic perspective.

Rekindling Desire: good read for couples and clinicians alike - Susan Robison, Ph. D. Ellicott City, MD

Barry and Emily McCarthy have scored another hit with their revised edition of Rekindling Desire. The book is a nice mix of clinical case histories, didactic information, and practical advice. Some of the advice might be hard to follow for couples who are deeply entrenched in the shame-blame pattern of sexual interaction and a difficult book for couples to use by themselves but I know that couples in my practice are finding the book a very helpful syllabus to the lessons of their couple’s counseling. I would encourage other couple counselors to consider using this book as a guide in the work they do with couples with inhibited sexual desire.
For clinicians and their clients, the McCarthys give plenty of explanation about how easy it is for couples to slide into a no-sex, low-sex pattern. They define the various types of marriage and sexual interaction styles which, while not dysfunctional themselves, have possible unique traps that can lead to dysfunctional patterns. The case histories illustrating the principles of each chapter are rich and believable. I was sure they were writing about some of the couples I have seen in my practice or met socially.
Some of the key concepts in the book such as the Good Enough Sex model and the description of how a couple can function as an Intimate Sexual Team are very permission-giving and encouraging for clients discouraged by their conflicts and lack of satisfaction in their sexual relationship. The chapters on the differing male and female sexual experiences are succinctly and sensitively presented. The authors do a good job debunking the myths about romantic, spontaneous sexual encounters and how those early experiences can actually set up couples for disappointments after the fire of infatuation settles down.
I particularly like the authors’ emphasis on relapse prevention. So many therapy models fail to plan for this after-therapy phase of change in spite of the research by Prochaska, DiClemente, & Norcross that stopping therapy or any self-help change process after the change has been implemented is a recipe for backsliding.
The material in the book on how to set intimate and sexual dates would be extremely valuable for any busy couples especially dual career couples with children who find their sexual time shoved into the corners of their lives after the “important” tasks of the day are completed. The McCarthys remind all couples to reverse those priorities so that the energy and satisfaction of intimate and erotic aspects of relationships form the foundation of relationships to deal with the rest of life. I hope that the McCarthys consider writing a non-clinical book for regular couples who have not yet developed the bad habits on the road to a low-sex, no-sex marriage. Their advice about how to increase sensuality, intimacy, and eroticism can remind any couple to take the time and effort for their loving relationships.

Wonderful, compassionate, practical book to help a painful problem

As a professional therapist, I consider this book a wonderful resource for couples who are struggling with low sexual desire. Low sexual desire is a very painful subject matter for many of the couples that I see in my practice. This book offers hope for those couples that there is a way out of their struggle if they can learn to get out of avoidance and the blame game and instead work as a team to improve their sexuality. McCarthy and McCarthy address the importance of what goes on outside of the bedroom, such as the impact of destructive anger or a lack of emotional connection as sexual turn offs. Also, the McCarthy's recognize that too many couples have a dichotomous approach to sexuality that makes sexual intercourse too far of a reach for many. For example, many couples are not even holding hands or giving caresses and then wonder why it feels like too far of a leap to have sex. As avoidance becomes a primary sexual strategy, then it feels too awkward to even think about how to approach their partner sexually. In this book, they take a compassionate approach with couples to break this negative vicious cycle and give practical ways to build a bridge to sexuality though affection, playfulness, acceptance, and reassurance. They encourage couples to build in non-demand sexual play that may or may not lead to intercourse to restore the fun, caring, and pleasure in the sexual relationship. I highly recommend this book.

It was great to use for selfstudy next to the therapy sessions

My girlfriend and I read this book while in therapy, and it covers a lot of topics which are necessary to deal with sexual issues. It was great to use for selfstudy next to the therapy sessions, and allowed us to speak about the same topics using the same "language". There are a lot of valid points made for couples struggling with sex, and reading this book will give you a introduction to how to start dealing with them.

The only issue for me was the tendency the book had to repeat it's content. Hence 4 stars.

About the Author

Nathan Hall is a Principal Lecturer in Criminology and Policing at the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth. He is a member of the Cross-Government Hate Crime Independent Advisory Group (IAG) and the Association of Chief Police Officers Hate Crime Working Group. Nathan has also acted as an independent member of the UK government hate crime delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and is a member of the Crown Prosecution Service (Wessex) Independent Strategic Scrutiny and Involvement Panel, Hampshire Constabulary’s Strategic IAG, and the Metropolitan Police Service’s Hate Crime Diamond Group.

Abbee Corb works as a consultant with the law enforcement and intelligence services within Canada and abroad. Abbee provides educational instruction to law enforcement and government agencies around the world and she is also a university professor. She has a PhD in Criminology and bears the designation of CMAS (Certified Master Anti-Terrorism Specialist). Abbee has been working in the field of hate and extremism for over 20 years and began her career dealing with Internet-based hatred and right wing extremists. She also worked dealing with Nazi War criminals for almost 10 years. Abbee is a court-qualified expert on hate and extremism, specifically as it applies to the online environment. She has produced three award-winning films dealing with hate crime, is a published author and is periodically called upon by the Canadian media and pro-active community-based organizations as a consultant on right-wing extremism. Abbee is also an expert on countering violent extremism and hate crime.

Paul Giannasi is a Police Superintendent, working within the Ministry of Justice in the United Kingdom. He leads a cross-governmental hate crime programme which brings all sectors of government together to coordinate efforts in order to improve the response to hate crime from across the criminal justice system. Paul is the UK ‘National Point of Contact’ to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on hate crime and has worked to share good practice within the OSCE region and within Africa. Paul is also a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Hate Crime Group and is one of the authors of the Police Hate Crime Manual, which provides guidance to UK police officers and their partners.

John G. D. Grieve joined the Metropolitan Police in 1966 at Clapham and served as a police officer and detective throughout London, in every role from undercover officer to policy chair for over 37 years. His duties involved the Drugs, Flying , Robbery and Murder Squads senior investigator. He was also the borough commander at Bethnal Green and head of training at Hendon Police College and was the first Director of Intelligence for the Metropolitan Police. He led the Anti-Terrorist Squad as National Co-ordinator during the 1996-1998 bombing campaigns and created the Race and Violent Crime Task Force. In the latter role he was responsible with others for the creation and development of the Cultural Change, Critical Incident and Community Impact models for strategic crisis management. He retired in May 2002.
