Monochromatic HDR Photography is the first book intended to show photographers how to work at the intersection of two up-and-coming trends that are at the forefront of the digital revolution: Black & White and High Dynamic Range imaging.

The book explains techniques for extending dynamic range, monochromatic conversion methods and best practices where the two technologies intersect. Since successful digital monochromatic image creation generally requires using the color information inherent in RAW exposures, most case studies will be presented in full color.

In addition, Monochromatic HDR Photography provides extensive coverage of the creative vision required to successfully create monochromatic HDR images and the workflow necessary to make art prints from this specialized image making technique.

Images and details from Monochromatic HDR Photography, by Harold Davis
Pyramide. Paris, France. I shot this image of the glass pyramid in the central court of the Louvre. As explained in my book, creating this image required shooting a bracketed sequence and using automated software to seamlessly blend the exposures.

Sunset in the Headlands. San Francisco, California. I wanted this image to imply the sense of beautiful color using high-dynamic range black and white, almost as if I had sketched the sunset in pencil rather than using color paints. More details on implying color with black and white can be found in my book.

Crown of Thorns. Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France. I was struck by the ornate nature of this northern spire. To dramatize the stark and detailed outlines that make a parallel with a literal crown of thorns, I knew I needed to enhance and extend the dynamic range of the image. How did I do it? Read Monochromatic HDR Photography to find out.

Ancient Bristlcone. California-Nevada border. To capture the full definition of the textures and swirls in the ancient wood of this Bristlecone, I used a bracketed sequence of eight exposures at shutter speeds ranging from 5 seconds to 1/80 of a second. More details on how I processed the image and converted it to monochrome can be found in my book.

A Letter to Amazon.com Readers from Harold Davis

Dear Amazon.com Reader:

I am writing this letter to tell you about my book, Monochromatic HDR Photography. If you are thinking about purchasing my book, it might help you to know how I came to create it, and what you’ll find in it.

The first thing you should know about Monochromatic HDR Photography is that it is a book about digital black and white photography. From the very beginning of photography, practitioners have attempted to extend the dynamic range of their imagery. With digital photography, it has become easily possible to extend the range of lights and darks captured using techniques that fall under the rubric of HDR, which is short for High Dynamic Range.

While HDR techniques can enhance many color photos, overuse of HDR can result in garish imagery. But color isn’t everything! The HDR techniques of extending lights and darks in an image can also be applied to black and white photography. This avoids any problems with typical over-processing of color images in HDR, and is a really great technique for creating compelling black and white photographs. Monochromatic HDR Photography stands at the intersection of two hot trends in digital photography: black and white, and HDR.

My book presents flowcharts and a detailed workflow for shooting and processing black and white HDR imagery. A complete step-by-step case study is shown using an image of the ceiling of a cathedral. This is a fine example of what you can do with monochromatic HDR: Inside the cathedral, with bright sunlight shining through stained glass windows, and dark corners masked in shadow, the scene in front of the camera contains huge variations in the dynamic range from the lightest whites to the darkest blacks.

In Monochromatic HDR Photography, the key topics you will learn in the context of creative image-making include:

  • What subjects work in black & white
  • Shooting sequences in the field to extend dynamic range
  • Working with multi-RAW processing
  • Using hand-HDR techniques
  • Using LAB for color and dynamic range enhancement
  • Using HDR software to create monochromatic imagery
  • Tools, techniques and best practices for monochromatic conversions
  • Printing monochromatic HDR images
  • This is a unique and beautiful book that provides a practical workflow for photographers seriously interested in extending the tonal range of their digital black and white photographs. I truly hope you will enjoy Monochromatic HDR Photography as much as I’ve enjoyed creating the photos in it, and detailing how I made them.

    Best wishes in photography,

    Another winner!
    By Mr Anthony R Cook
This is the third book by Harold Davis that I've bought in the past three months. I had learned lots from the first two, and wondered if in fact he'd have much to say that was new. Well, I needn't have worried!

The first book I bought by Harold Davis was on flower photography, and his techniques have transformed my approach to this, and many other, photographic subjects.

Then I bought The Way of the Digital Photographer. It's rare for me to buy books, because I normally do my learning from online sources. Harold's philosophy and teaching are clear and easy to follow. Even when he changes gear and becomes more technical, he explains his methods in a step by step fashion that's very successful. He's humorous too, which helps!

What I especially like is that he gives worked examples of every technique, and, like every good teacher, moves from the simple to the complex, and from the familiar to the unfamiliar, recapping at every stage. As an ex-teacher-trainer myself I'd say his writing/teaching is impressive.

Then along came Harold's Monochromatic HDR Photography. Which I bought! I thought I had already learned lots about post-processing from his previous books, but Harold takes it to a whole new level - with stunning results.

All the books are must-haves for those photographers who want to produce the very finest work that the digital negative contains.

    Bravo!

An excellent resource for any photographer interested in Monochromatic HDR
    By Bob
If you are interested in an in-depth approach to HDR photography with a focus on monochromatic images then this book by Harold Davis seems to me to be an excellent choice. I am not an expert on this subject but I am having no problem understanding Davis’ logic or strategies used in the various workflows he uses. I would not recommend this book for the real beginner and to go where the author wants us to go to get the results he demonstrates well in his book one should have an advanced camera which they know how to use in various modes, and a good understanding of Photoshop. Davis delves into a variety of software approaches and admits to benefits from each.
A lot of books on photography spend a portion of the book writing about subject matter that we would already know most likely if we were choosing a book like this. For example, “How to buy a camera…” This book does not do that. There is plenty of definition and explanation of terminology but he gets right into the topic. I liked this about the book.
The layout of this 200 plus paged document is about 30 to 40 % photos taken by the author that demonstrate his points. Many are full pages and most are monochromatic. The rest of the book is detailed description of his workflow with some charts and graphs along the way. I have a good deal more to learn from this book and I look forward to doing that.

HDR - Not just for color anymore
    By Mark Mattson
Review by Mark Mattson,Computer Users of Erie

Color is the best. Color sells. Color is what a real photograph is. Color is the only photography I will ever do.

How short-sighted and closed-minded a lot of people can be. Yes, color imagery has a look and feel all its own, and can evoke emotions in most any viewer. But to limit oneself and one’s work to just color is missing out on a whole world that awaits exploration: the world of monochromatic imaging.

Photography was born in the early days of the 19th century, approximately 1826 or 1827…the exact date is lost in history. In those days, ALL photos made were monochrome - or black and white. Color photography experiments began around 1860. But n affordable, long-lasting color film and process did not appear until 1935 when Kodak introduced their Kodachrome line of films.

Even after the advent of color films for general purpose photography, black and white continued to be a popular medium to work in. Most of the more famous photographers worked in this field, including Ansel Adams, Steiglitz, and others. Through hard work and countless hours in the darkroom, they produced amazing images that are classic examples of the art form.

Digital imaging has made the processes vastly easier, by giving you instant feedback on your exposure and composition, and post-capture processing now takes place in the ‘digital’ darkroom, as opposed to the traditional ‘wet’ darkroom of days gone by. Digital imaging has also introduced a new technique known as HDR, or High Dynamic Range imaging, a method where combining a sequence of exposures extends the range of tones you can capture well beyond the range of the camera.

In his newest book, author and photographer Harold Davis explores the world of Monochromatic HDR imaging as a way of producing high quality fine art images with impact and emotional meaning for the viewer.

This volume is jam-packed with not only step-by-step tutorials and tips on how to achieve the best images you can, it is also overflowing with sample images created by author Davis to explain and demonstrate the techniques covered in the book. Practically every page has a photograph on it, with technical information presented on how the image was created. The images in this book make the purchase price worth it alone.

The scope of this book is wide. In only 209 pages, he presents 53 topics arranged into 4 sections, touching on topics ranging from RAW processing, HDR sequence shooting, Lightroom and Photoshop techniques and more. But the basics are not forgotten either. There are pages devoted to teaching you how to visualize your final image in black and white before you shoot it, and learning how to see in monochrome.

One point to remember, though, when capturing images to make monochrome prints: be sure to capture them in COLOR. Processing images form black and white is done using the color channels of your master file. When it’s time, you then convert the original color capture to the monochrome state. If you do this, you can always go back and produce color versions of the image as well. If you set your camera to shoot in black and white you will lose this ability.

I’ve done a lot of monochrome shooting in my days. Most of it was done when I was shooting film, as this was early on in my photography days. I’ve tinkered some with converting my color digital images into black and white, but haven’t found yet the right way to go about it.

    Until now.

When I read through this book for the review, I learned a lot about how I should be doing things, to get the images I really want to show. A lot of the concepts I’ve known now for some time, but just haven’t made the connection to monochrome. With Harold and this book I now have a guide to show me the way on this new journey.
