I was looking for an introduction to how the sea functions in the 21st century as a site of international exchange for both commercial and diplomatic activities, particularly in non-territorial waters, and this book was immensely helpful. It has many recent and specific examples (the author also wrote a book on disputes in the South China Sea) and abstracts these into a larger thesis that would be useful for those in policy.
