The Culture of Digital Fighting Games: Performance and Practice (Routledge Studies in New Media and Cyberculture), by Todd Harper

This book examines the complex network of influences that collide in the culture of digital fighting games. Players from all over the world engage in competitive combat with one another, forming communities in both real and virtual spaces, attending tournaments and battling online via internet-connected home game consoles. But what is the logic behind their shared playstyle and culture? What are the threads that tie them together, and how does this inform our understanding of competitive gaming, community, and identity?

Informed by observations made at one of the biggest fighting game events in the world – the Evolution Series tournament, or "EVO" – and interviews with fighting game players themselves, this book covers everything from the influence of arcade spaces, to the place of gender and ethnicity in the community, to the clash of philosophies over how these games should be played in the first place. In the process, it establishes the role of technology, gameplay, and community in how these players define both themselves and the games that they play.

An excellent, and important piece of scholarship
By Abraham D Stein
This book not only represents a labor of love on the part of Dr. Harper, it is an essential piece of the growing literature and scholarship around digital fighting games and the fighting games community.

The fighting games community (FGC) is a complex, and complicated domain that simultaneously draws cultural strength from it's insularity, while also suffering under all-too prevalent misogyny, racism, and prejudice that regularly sully the community with deserved negative perceptions.

What Dr. Harper has done with this work is shine a bright expository light on the FGC, by way of established autoethnographic methods that have become a cornerstone of game studies research. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Harper has treated fighting games and the community around them with the delicateness and care of a researcher who believes that the subject of inquiry deserves honest analysis, and also as an ethnographer who freely acknowledges his own love and admiration for the games, players, and world that serve as the subject of this book.

Above all, Dr. Harper's writing style, his ease of tone, his wit, and his thoughtfulness, make this book not only informative, but a joy to read.

Great academic work
By Miguel Angel Sicart Vila
This book constitutes an intelligent, engaging, and deep analysis of the culture of and around fighting games, presented with excellent scholarship and really valuable insights. I think the growing importance of eSports deserves books of this analytical depth, and while it is oriented to an academic audience, the general public might find this book interesting to read.
The price is obviously too high; however, that is a decision of the publisher more than of the author. Perhaps publishers should realize that these academic books deserve a better prizing scheme.
